When residents enter their apartment for the first time, they’re given a “hub”—a smart home remote controller—that comes preprogrammed with a handful of functions and modes to introduce them to the system. The settings coordinate the lights, thermostat, and locks. So, in night mode, for example, the thermostat automatically turns down, the door locks, and the lights go off.
